Location of the Guillermo Haro Astrophysics Observatory and How to get there...
The OAGH is located on Mount Mariquita in the northern region of the state of Sonora, 13 km North of Cananea City and 30 km South of the Arizona border. On the other side of the border, Mount Hopkins can be seen, this is the site of the Multi-Mirror telescope (currently with only one 6.5 meter mirror). A bit futher away, is Kitt Peak Observatory, one of the world’s most important observatories. The dome of Kitt Peak’s large telescope can be seen with binoculars.

How to get to the OAGH:
In Mexico: Fly to Hermosillo. The OAGH frequently covers the Hermosillo-Cananea route by car (3.5 hours). For Mexico-Hermosillo flight schedules check Aeromexico or Mexicana webpages.
From foreign countries: The best option is to fly to Tucson. We usually pick up our colleagues from visiting institutions (with a roundtrip fee of $150 USD). From Tucson to Cananea its a 3.5 hour drive. The Observatory is 13 KM Northeast of Cananea City, the trip takes 40 min.
Other options for getting to the OAGH:
One option is: Upon arriving to the Hermosillo airport you can ask a taxi driver if there will be any departures to Agua Prieta, Sonora because Cananea is on the way, or also ask about departures to Nogales, Sonora and let them know that you want to get to IMURIS (200 KM from Hermosillo), this is the spot where the detour to Cananea starts (aproximately 80 KM further). Also, you can go to the bus station and take the bus that goes to Cananea or to IMURIS, if you do decide to take any of these options, please give notice to the Cananea Delegation with plenty of time, so they can pick you up. This is a map of Sonora which provides an image of the route.
Stay in Cananea:
Visitors can stay at “Casa Green” at the Cananea site. For more information send a message to: inaoecan@pcdlink.com or contact us by phone or fax (check above). Astronomers may stay at “Casa Green” or at the “Little Blue House”, which is only 100 meters from the telescope. With this second choice you will gain 40 min. of sleep!
